Business intelligence was featured heavily throughout the day: during the keynotes, on the show floor, in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/uk\/about\/events\/worldtour10\/breakoutsessions.epx?tab=Innovations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">several innovation sessions<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/uk\/about\/events\/worldtour10\/breakoutsessions.epx?tab=BusinessIntelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a dedicated afternoon BI track<\/a>. This post gives an overview of the day, discusses the content of sessions in the BI track, and includes links to all the presentation materials used.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image16.jpg?resize=690%2C439&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"439\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Tim Noble, the UK Managing Director, kicked the day off with a review of the current trends affecting technology and the economy as a whole, and reiterating SAP\u2019s high-level strategic themes of On-Premise, On-Demand, On-Device, and Orchestration. He drew many parallels between the challenges of Formula 1 racing and the rest of the business world.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image20.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image20_thumb.jpg?resize=332%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"332\" height=\"225\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image26.jpg?resize=500%2C353&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"500\" height=\"353\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After lunch, the afternoon breakout sessions started, including a dedicated BI track, devoted to the BusinessObjects BI and EIM set of products.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image27.jpg?resize=690%2C452&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"452\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I kicked off the afternoon with a \u201cmini-keynote\u201d presentation on the Business Intelligence Future: Simple, Seamless, Social, and Strategic<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image28.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image34.jpg?resize=690%2C343&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"343\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Recommended resources included several analyst white papers and the books \u201cCompeting on Analytics\u201d and \u201cAnalytics at Work\u201d by Thomas Davenport et al.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: block; float: none; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image35.jpg?resize=592%2C504&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"592\" height=\"504\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Richard also outlined SAP\u2019s four-step process for developing a solid BI strategy, with a series of interactive \u201cplaybooks\u201d that help you guide through the process:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"display: inline; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/07\/image42.jpg?resize=208%2C199&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"208\" height=\"199\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/> Carl explained the many benefits of <a href=\"http:\/\/bi.ondemand.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BI OnDemand<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No messy software install<\/li>\n<li>No more service packs or bug fixes<\/li>\n<li>No training staff on how to administer it<\/li>\n<li>No need to buy, maintain a server and deal with IT<\/li>\n<li>Always 24&#215;7 availability<\/li>\n<li>Multi-tenanted<\/li>\n<li>OpEx rather than CapEx<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And he outlined a list of questions that helps determine whether a BI OnDemand offer is the right fit for your project:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you on a tight time line?<\/li>\n<li>Do you use Salesforce.com or any other SAAS offering?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have tight IT resources (personal and hardware wise)?<\/li>\n<li>Are you having challenges getting access to CAPEX?<\/li>\n<li>Do you want share data with customers\/partners?<\/li>\n<li>Are you allowed to put data outside of your firewall?<\/li>\n<li>Are there any legislative reasons why you can\u2019t?<\/li>\n<li>Do you absolutely need to connect to On-Premise data?
