It explained analytics at a high level, and talked about what companies can do to get more value in the future.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image81.jpg?resize=690%2C319&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"319\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>What I didn\u2019t like about the video was the black and white treatment of old \u201cdescriptive analytics\u201d as being very basic, compared to \u201cnew\u201d, more business-focused \u201cpredictive analytics\u201d (see \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2011\/03\/business-analytics-vs-business-intelligence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">business intelligence vs business analytics<\/a>\u201d for more ranting). Business intelligence has always been about using information to improve the business (nobody would have spend money on it otherwise!). The \u201cnew\u201d technologies mentioned in the video: statistical analysis, forecasting, modeling, etc. have been around for decades. The (admittedly more nuanced, less-compelling) reality is that BI has long been a continuum of functionality, and that as time, technology has improved what you can do, but the underlying business usages\/need have remained the same.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ana.pt\/portal\/page\/portal\/ANA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image101.jpg?resize=690%2C141&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"141\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The keynote customer speaker was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/profile\/view?id=86729626\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rui Carneiro<\/a>, Head of ICT Project Office for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ana.pt\/portal\/page\/portal\/ANA\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ANA Airports<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ANA_%E2%80%93_Aeroportos_de_Portugal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aerportos de Portugal<\/a>, the company responsible for the five main airports in Portugal, and the 28 Million people that visited the country via plane in 2010.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image82.jpg?resize=690%2C367&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"367\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rui explained the history of ANA\u2019s use of the SAP BusinessObjects, starting with version 5 in 2004, using traffic data coming only from airport billing systems. The company quickly experienced huge increases in both demand for information and the amount of data available, and needed to starting thinking about taking the system to the next level.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image131.jpg?resize=690%2C447&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"447\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In 2005, the company started a data warehousing project to create a system that would be capable of supporting their information needs into the foreseeable future. This involved data coming from multiple operational and financial systems, and the creation of key performance indicators.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image201.jpg?resize=690%2C485&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"485\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Using BusinessObjects Data Integrator (now part of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/solutions\/sapbusinessobjects\/large\/eim\/data-services\/index.epx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Data Services<\/a>), the company completed phase one of the project in 2006. Over time, the system gradually went from being a \u201cnice to have\u201d to being as important to the business as their operational systems. The plan is to make ANZ (more) privatized in the future, and good access to data is essential to a smooth transition to the new corporate models.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image231.jpg?resize=690%2C477&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"477\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Rui then demonstrated a selection of some of the great interactive dashboards his team developed with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/solutions\/sapbusinessobjects\/large\/business-intelligence\/dashboards\/sapbusinessobjects-dashboards\/index.epx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BusinessObjects Dashboards<\/a> (previously know as Xcelsius), and showed off the intuitive, self-service access to airport traffic data using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/solutions\/sapbusinessobjects\/large\/business-intelligence\/data-exploration\/index.epx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP BusinessObjects Explorer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image83.jpg?resize=690%2C338&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"338\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image301.jpg?resize=690%2C446&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"446\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s more detail about one of the traffic dashboards (note that all the data is fake.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image84.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image_thumb7.jpg?resize=690%2C463&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"463\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>One of the most interesting dashboards is the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/routelab.ana.pt\/DRD\/?airport=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">RouteLab<\/a>\u201d extranet business intelligence dashboard designed to help the airport\u2019s airline <em>customers <\/em>have better access to information, and optimize their operations.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/routelab.ana.pt\/DRD\/Statistics\/index.htm?airport=Lisboa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image85.jpg?resize=690%2C444&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"444\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/routelab.ana.pt\/DRD\/Statistics\/index.htm?airport=Lisboa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public area<\/a> of the site gives basic statistics about the airport \u2013 here, for example, is an excerpt from the most recent monthly traffic report:<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image86.jpg?resize=690%2C195&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"195\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But there\u2019s also a Partner area available that gives much more detailed, valuable data for partners (see the \u201cYour airline area\u201d link in the top menu.)<\/p>\n<p>Because the airport handles traffic from multiple airlines, they have more information than is available to any particular operator. They have provided a portal for the airlines that gives them global information about particular routes. Is it good news if traffic rises ten percent on a particular route? It\u2019s impossible to tell unless there\u2019s something to compare it to. The RouteLab dashboard would let the airline find out, for example, that the overall traffic on the route, for all airlines, had increased 20%, and so the airline was losing market share\u2026<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image87.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; padding-top: 0px; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"image\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/image_thumb8.jpg?resize=690%2C482&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"image\" width=\"690\" height=\"482\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You can see the dashboard above.
