Two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>First, a real understanding of how people create and use information, according to a Harvard Business Review article entitled <a href=\"http:\/\/hbr.org\/2013\/01\/why-it-fumbles-analytics\/ar\/1\" target=\"_blank\">Why IT fumbles Analytics<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Second, Forrester analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bevelson\" target=\"_blank\">Boris Evelson<\/a> says you should have <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.forrester.com\/boris_evelson\/13-01-20-do_you_have_bi_on_bi\" target=\"_blank\">BI on BI<\/a> (SAP BusinessObjects supports the types of analysis cited, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www54.sap.com\/solutions\/tech\/enterprise-information-management\/software\/data-integrity-steward\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Information Steward<\/a> is a dedicated product for data governance)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Just Don\u2019t Call It A Game Changer<\/h3>\n<p>As Jaspersoft is kind enough to point out, analytics firmly embedded inside applications <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/insights\/2013\/01\/rethinking-bi-why-analytics-are-the-fabric-of-the-future\/\" target=\"_blank\">are the future<\/a>, and so, inspired by Jessica Hagy of <a href=\"http:\/\/thisisindexed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">thisisindexed<\/a>, I again portrayed SAP HANA as a <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/game-changer-2.html\" target=\"_blank\">game changer<\/a>, despite the <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.yfrog.com\/kimxjbbj\" target=\"_blank\">feline casualties<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t buy it? Well how about if it\u2019s illustrated by a bizarre<a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bG9JSusuZYU\" target=\"_blank\"> tron-like 3D race around a pinball universe<\/a>? (complete with American-game-show-host-announcer-voice)<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bG9JSusuZYU\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"690\" height=\"388\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Still not? Then how about when <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/applebyj\" target=\"_blank\">John Appleby<\/a> of Bluefin explains it in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bluefinsolutions.com\/insights\/blog\/the_sap_bw_on_hana_faq\/\" target=\"_blank\">BW on HANA Frequently Asked Questions blog<\/a>: \u201cSAP HANA is much faster than regular relational databases like Oracle or Microsoft SQL Server, the data warehouse performs much faster \u2013 but more than that, it&#8217;s cheaper as well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still have questions? To get started fast, follow <a href=\"http:\/\/scn.sap.com\/people\/josef.minde2\" target=\"_blank\">Josef Minde<\/a>\u2019s instructions on how to get <a href=\"http:\/\/scn.sap.com\/blogs\/josef\/2012\/10\/26\/how-we-tested-hana-with-the-free-trial-on-aws\" target=\"_blank\">up and running on SAP HANA in less than an hour using AWS<\/a>. And as <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/GregChase\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Chase<\/a> points out, this makes <a href=\"http:\/\/www.saphana.com\/community\/blogs\/blog\/2013\/01\/18\/sap-hana-one--sap-hana-in-a-light-bulb\" target=\"_blank\">SAP HANA as convenient as a light bulb<\/a> because you can simply \u201cswitch it off when you leave the room, and on again when you come back.\u201d Talk about illuminating insights\u2026<\/p>\n<h3>Oh Yeah? Visualize That!<\/h3>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"background-image: none; margin: 0px 0px 0px 5px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; display: inline; float: right; padding-top: 0px; border: 0px;\" title=\"nfl player of year small\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/nfl-player-of-year-small.jpg?resize=200%2C367&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"nfl player of year small\" width=\"200\" height=\"367\" align=\"right\" border=\"0\" \/>Could it really be that pie charts might not be as <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2013\/01\/brain-scans-show-no-difference-in-pie-chart-and-bar-chart-perception.html\" target=\"_blank\">irredeemably awful as we\u2019ve been told<\/a>\u00a0(or is that only for certain unusual tasks?)<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Few\u00a0recently organized a dashboard competition. After the winners were announced, he <a href=\"http:\/\/www.perceptualedge.com\/blog\/?p=1466\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> \u201cI don\u2019t feel that I should judge the efforts of others unless I\u2019m willing to submit my own work for scrutiny as well\u201d \u2013 and went on to explain why his own dashboard is better than the other entries (\u201clet\u2019s consider a few ways that this design succeeds where others fell short\u201d).<\/p>\n<p>The National Football League website gets <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-sap.com\/sap-unveils-online-dashboard-to-provide-fans-with-analytic-insights-for-nfl-com-fantasy-football-player-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">new fan-pleasing analytics powered by SAP<\/a>, including a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/honors\/fantasy-player-of-the-year\" target=\"_blank\">fantasy football analytic experience<\/a> build by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrewLeBlancSAP\" target=\"_blank\">Drew LeBlanc<\/a>. There are no pie charts, as far as I know, but <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infovis-wiki.net\/index.php\/Data-Ink_Ratio\" target=\"_blank\">ink-to-data ratio<\/a> proponents won\u2019t be happy. However, it will hopefully score highly on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/donaldmac\" target=\"_blank\">Donald MacCormick<\/a>\u2019s formula for effective dashboards: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.antivia.com\/blog\/?p=1277\" target=\"_blank\">Total value of a dashboard = number of views x average value per view<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Talking of Superior Performance\u2026<\/h3>\n<p>\u2018Tis the season of performance reviews, which most people hate. It wasn\u2019t always so, says this <a href=\"http:\/\/compensationinsider.com\/the-history-of-performance-reviews-infographic\/\" target=\"_blank\">infographic of performance review history<\/a>. And if you believe the conclusion that \u201csocial performance management\u201d is the way to go, then you should take a look at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.successfactors.com\/performance-reviews\/\" target=\"_blank\">SAP SuccessFactors with SAP Jam<\/a> (SAP employees are moving to the system for this year\u2019s goal-setting).<\/p>\n<p>To help you achieve this year\u2019s goals, a new SAP Jam video goes over the use cases for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=952l7G8y84g\" target=\"_blank\">Enterprise Social in sales, service, and marketing<\/a>. The key is to integrate social within existing work processes &#8212; as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/choirshark\">Chris Horak<\/a> put it this week: &#8220;collaboration without context is just chatter..&#8221; Might that be why Salesforce is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/is-salesforce-pivoting-from-its-social-enterprise-rap-7000010277\/\" target=\"_blank\">playing down social on its home page<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3>But Is it Safe?!<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, your data is secure in the cloud. As explained by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LarsLuv\" target=\"_blank\">Lars Dalgaard<\/a> on a recent kickoff call, SuccessFactors has thousands of customers, and by pooling resources, can spend a lot more time and money than any individual company could. After all, it\u2019s just like your bank: they do a better job of keeping your money safe than you can &#8212; and there\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.successfactors.com\/cloud\/security\/\" target=\"_blank\">an encryption option<\/a>, so access would be useless anyway.<\/p>\n<p>I might be a bit cynical, but I suspect it\u2019s not the technical arguments that will count in most organizations \u2013 it will be whether other reputable companies have already made the leap. So why not join <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LarsLuv\/status\/294098662680850433\" target=\"_blank\">Pepsi\u2019s 300,000 employees in the cloud<\/a>?<\/p>\n<h3>In-Helix Processing?<\/h3>\n<p>Researchers say you can squeeze <a href=\"http:\/\/gizmodo.com\/5978581\/you-can-squeeze-22-petabytes-of-data-into-one-gram-of-dna\" target=\"_blank\">2.2 Petabytes of information into a single gram of DNA<\/a>. It\u2019s clear that you can use <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sap.com\/solutions\/technology\/in-memory-computing-platform\/hana\/analytics\/big-data.epx\" target=\"_blank\">MapReduce to analyze DNA and help treat cancer<\/a>, but <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/DNA_computing\" target=\"_blank\">DNA computers<\/a> may be able to diagnose cancer directly. Will it be long before somebody comes up with a way to replicate the MapReduce algorithm using DNA strands, for \u201cIn-Helix processing\u201d?<\/p>\n<h3>It Sucks To Be Deluded<\/h3>\n<p>Sadly, it turns out that data just isn\u2019t enough to sway incorrect opinions \u2013 if anything, <a href=\"http:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2013\/01\/24\/study-finds-that-we-still-believe-untruths-even-after-instant-online-corrections\/\" target=\"_blank\">people double-down<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>You Got What You Paid For, So Why Are You Complaining?<\/h3>\n<p>Design thinking to <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sap.com\/innovation\/industries\/customer-experience-building-trust-and-excitement-025717\" target=\"_blank\">improve the customer experience<\/a> is all the rage, but how much of it comes down to \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sap.com\/innovation\/industries\/customer-experience-building-trust-and-excitement-025717#comment-777595616\" target=\"_blank\">you get what you pay for<\/a>\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>It seems that there might sometimes be a clash between \u201canalytics\u201d and \u201csocial\u201d. For example, today\u2019s airlines have great analytics, and they seem to have concluded that, for whatever reason, people generally prefer low prices instead of a pleasurable flight. After all, it IS possible to have a wonderful flying experience: just travel in first class, or jump in a private jet. But most of us have concluded that we\u2019re not willing to pay the price. Another example: if you chose not to pay the premium for a changeable ticket, is it reasonable to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%22change%20fee%22\" target=\"_blank\">complain on twitter about change fees?<\/a><\/p>\n<p>People clearly assume change fees are only about administration costs, and so are outraged when a change costs more than the original ticket. But airlines brandish the threat of fees as a price differentiation mechanism \u2013 which means that your cheap non-changeable flight is essentially subsidized by the business person who is not sure when his meeting will end.<\/p>\n<p>But as sentiment analysis guru <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/sethgrimes\" target=\"_blank\">Seth Grimes<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SethGrimes\/status\/294375648758218752\" target=\"_blank\">points out<\/a>, the challenge is passenger perception: \u201cpeople decline an demand to pay more for a seat that doesn&#8217;t cost an airline any more\u201c and \u201cinjury is added to price-gouging insult.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies have long used marketing techniques to <a href=\"http:\/\/msc.pef.czu.cz\/msc_em\/data\/Horan\/20102011\/Prezentations\/Advertising%20Makes%20You%20Buy%20Things%20You%20Do%20Not%20Need%20-%20Group7.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">overcome strictly rational thinking<\/a>. \u201cUnderserved\u201d criticism on social media might just be the flip side of this effect, and may start swaying packaging choices (e.g. as with enterprise selling, companies may start with a higher price and then offer discounts, rather than using a low price and expensive addons) \u2013 call it \u201coffer social engineering\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Enterprise Mobile is Dead Already?!<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eaconsult.com\/2013\/01\/23\/the-end-of-the-mobile-enterprise-market-starts-now\/\" target=\"_blank\">The End of the Mobile Enterprise Market Starts Now<\/a> according to analyst <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/josheac\" target=\"_blank\">Joshua Greenbaum<\/a> (because it\u2019s about touch and user experience, not the device).<\/p>\n<h3>Top Ten SAP Analytic Posts From Last Year<\/h3>\n<p>I guess I\u2019ll have to try harder to get on <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sap.com\/innovation\/analytics\/editors-pick-top-10-posts-on-analytics-023981\" target=\"_blank\">this list<\/a> next year (although I do think this list of <a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.sap.com\/innovation\/analytics\/top-50-analytics-twitter-influencers-06179\" target=\"_blank\">analytics twitter influencers<\/a> is deeply flawed)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What\u2019s Missing From Your BI?
