It\u2019s a great venue for out-of-town guests situated just a few minutes\u2019 walk from Amsterdam\u2019s Central Station.<\/p>\n<p>After Hortonworks president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/herb-cunitz\/6\/281\/470\" target=\"_blank\">Herb Cunitz<\/a> welcomed attendees, CEO Rob Bearden outlined the Big Data opportunities in a market he estimated to be worth $100Bn market by 2020.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto; border-width: 0px;\" title=\"hortonworks big data market growth\" alt=\"hortonworks big data market growth\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/hortonworksbigdatamarketgrowth.png?resize=608%2C352&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"608\" height=\"352\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He believes that Hadoop has now <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crossing_the_Chasm\" target=\"_blank\">crossed the chasm<\/a> and is well on its way to mainstream acceptance (and 50% of that 2020 Big Data market).<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none; margin-left: auto; display: block; margin-right: auto; border: 0px;\" title=\"hadoop 2 crossing the chasm\" alt=\"hadoop 2 crossing the chasm\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/hadoop2crossingthechasm.png?resize=608%2C347&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"608\" height=\"347\" border=\"0\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/mgualtieri\" target=\"_blank\">Mike Gualtieri<\/a> principal analyst at Forrester went over the latest Forrester survey data. Data-related projects are at the forefront of the minds of today\u2019s IT executives, with 57% of them rating it as <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/forresterdatarelatedprojects.png\" target=\"_blank\">one of their top two priorities<\/a> (followed by Systems of Record and Systems of Engagement applications).<\/p>\n<p>Organizations are particularly interested in using new technology to support rising customer expectations: surveys show that <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/forresternewcustomerexpectations.png\" target=\"_blank\">66% of us want to be treated as individuals<\/a>, and 58% want us to enjoy our dealing with companies more.<\/p>\n<p>Gualtieri likened Hadoop to a data lake that was created by a dam, with lots of turbines at the bottom to process the data. He called Hadoop a \u201cunique technology\u201d and the \u201cfirst general-purpose Data Operating System (DataOS)\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With survey results showing that <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/forresterenterprisesusinghadoop.png\" target=\"_blank\">81% of large enterprises are already believers in the technology<\/a> (16% are using it in production, 45% in POC, and 20% plan to use it in the future), Galtieri believes \u201cA huge production wave is coming for Hadoop\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Willcoxmnk\" target=\"_blank\">Martin Wilcox<\/a> and Chris Twogood of Teradata and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pub\/tim-mallalieu\/0\/78\/b35\" target=\"_blank\">Timothy Mallalieu<\/a> of\u00a0 Microsoft all talked about the need to integrate Hadoop with traditional data technologies to get the most out of the new opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Hortonworks founder Arun Murthy gave an overview of the key recent advances in Hadoop 2.0, including the benefits of the YARN resource manager, the completion of the Stinger project to increase the performances of HIVE queries, and the STORM project for processing streaming data.<\/p>\n<p>You can watch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Fz-GnjOZAmQ\" target=\"_blank\">Day 1 keynotes here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Fz-GnjOZAmQ\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"float: none;
