Your customers are among the 1.3 billion people that are using social networks, sharing candid thoughts about your organization and your products with your potential prospects. Any company that can provide a seamless, engaging customer experience will reap competitive rewards.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Today&#8217;s employees are more demanding.<\/strong> Worldwide, only 13% of employees say that they are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gallup.com\/file\/strategicconsulting\/164735\/State%20of%20the%20Global%20Workplace%20Report%202013.pdf\">engaged<\/a> at work. And a whole generation of Millenials is starting to join the workforce, and they\u2019re horrified by the systems and processes they are forced to use. But studies show that companies that do manage to empower, inspire, and engage their employees (for example, using <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itbusiness.ca\/news\/telus-uses-sap-jam-as-glue-in-corporate-culture-transformation\/47101\">collaborative business platforms<\/a>) can earn up to three times higher <a href=\"http:\/\/secure.microedge.com\/rs\/microedge\/images\/Why_Should_You_Care_About_Employee_Engagement.pdf\">margin<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Big efficiency opportunities.<\/strong> Today, companies only use <a href=\"http:\/\/go.centurylinktechnology.com\/2014ForresterBigDataWhitepaperPage\">12%<\/a> of the data they have available to them for decision-making. According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/insights\/business_technology\/big_data_the_next_frontier_for_innovation\">McKinsey<\/a>, retailers that leverage the new opportunities afforded by Big Data can increase operating margins by up to 60%.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>It\u2019s not a lack of new technology<\/h3>\n<p>A perfect storm of new social, cloud, analytics, and mobile technologies have redefined what\u2019s possible. Gartner calls it the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/doc\/2673815\/transform-business-nexus-forces\">nexus of forces<\/a>.\u201d Forrester calls it the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.idclatin.com\/campaign\/predictions\/archives\/Presentaci%C3%B3n%20WW%20-%202014.pdf\">third platform<\/a>.\u201d They both believe these new technologies are transforming the way <em>every<\/em> industry works.<\/p>\n<p>Business expectations are high: 29% of executives expect at least half their earnings growth in the next five years to come from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/~\/media\/mckinsey\/dotcom\/client_service\/BTO\/PDF\/MOBT29_14-21_ITrevenue_GlobalSurvey_R8.ashx\">technology-enabled business innovatio<span style=\"color: #acb613;\">n<\/span><\/a>. But organizations are struggling to keep up: 40% of executives worry that their organizations will <a href=\"http:\/\/www.economistinsights.com\/sites\/default\/files\/downloads\/EIU_Agent%20of%20change_WEB_FINAL.pdf\">not keep pace<\/a> with technology change and lose their competitive edge.<\/p>\n<h3>The answer is \u201csimple\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>The biggest barrier to unlocking the potential of new technology to address new market opportunities is <strong>IT complexity<\/strong>. Today\u2019s IT systems are too complex and require too many resources to maintain. Fully 72% of today\u2019s IT dollars are used <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/s\/article\/9243312\/How_to_balance_maintenance_and_IT_innovation\">just keeping the lights on<\/a>, leaving less than a third of the budget to drive business innovation.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that new technologies can help us <strong>simplify<\/strong> as well as innovate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>We can reduce redundant layers.<\/strong> In-memory platforms such as <a href=\"http:\/\/saphana.com\">SAP HANA<\/a> allow us to rethink the world of databases and applications, dramatically accelerating the speed of business while radically simplifying complex IT layers. For example, the new <a href=\"http:\/\/scn.sap.com\/community\/cloud\/blog\/2014\/06\/18\/sap-simple-finance--a-more-detailed-look\">SAP Simple Finance<\/a> application stores every transaction just once for both operations and analytics. It eliminates over 90% of the redundant data and tables, while providing a single, real-time view of all financial data. For the first time, business executives can drill down seamlessly on an income statement down to the line item level, or pivot to a management view, on any dimension, or apply new business hierarchies on the fly, without any recalculations needed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We can simplify the user experience.<\/strong> Personalized, responsive, mobile-ready interfaces such as <a href=\"http:\/\/experience.sap.com\/fiori\/\">SAP Fiori<\/a> (now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.news-sap.com\/sapphire-now-sap-fiori-user-experience\/\">included<\/a> with all SAP software) make enterprise software simpler, more user-centric, and closer to what we\u2019re used to in the consumer world. The result is faster, wider deployments, more engaged employees, and a greater return on your IT investments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>We can make it easier to deploy, consume, and update software<\/strong>. A decade of enterprise cloud deployments have shown that there are clear speed and simplicity benefits of deploying applications in the cloud rather than your own systems. Many companies are still wary of cloud deployments. But they\u2019re already taking over: a recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cioinsight.com\/security\/slideshows\/shadow-its-growing-footprint.html\">survey<\/a> indicates that 81% of business workers (and 83% of IT staff!) admit to using unapproved cloud applications. Why? Because the existing way of doing things is just too slow, and too complex. You\u2019re already using cloud in your business &#8212; all we\u2019re really discussing now is how much more cloud your company will be using in the future, in what business areas, and when. (But no company will ever be 100% cloud \u2013 it\u2019s about being able to swap seamlessly as possible between on-premise and the cloud to assure the optimal <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cloudcomputing-news.net\/news\/2014\/feb\/04\/sap-on-right-mix-cloud-mobile-on-premise\/\">mix<\/a> over time.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The way forward is simple<\/h3>\n<p>Innovation is reshaping the way businesses and governments engage with their customers and citizens; empower and inspire employees; optimize resources in real time; and harness the potential of social and business networks.<\/p>\n<p>Companies need to use new technology possibilities to \u201crun simple\u201d and eliminate the barriers of complexity that are preventing them from business innovation.
