One of the reasons is that whenever that tracking comes to light, people get angry about it &#8212; for example in the infamous incident when <a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/kashmirhill\/2012\/02\/16\/how-target-figured-out-a-teen-girl-was-pregnant-before-her-father-did\/\" target=\"_blank\">Target &#8220;knew&#8221; a teenage girl was pregnant before her father did<\/a>. So the smart\u00a0companies don&#8217;t\u00a0reveal how much they know directly &#8212; because that&#8217;s too &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/recode.net\/2014\/04\/18\/introducing-a-theory-of-creepy\/\" target=\"_blank\">creepy<\/a>.&#8221; Instead, they act on the information indirectly, for example by\u00a0sending you a <em>selection<\/em>\u00a0of special offers, even though they know you&#8217;ll only be interested in the first one.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/big-data-marketers-t-shirt.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-6816 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/big-data-marketers-t-shirt.jpg?resize=372%2C700&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"big-data-marketers-t-shirt\" width=\"372\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What can you do about it?
