It\u2019s one of the largest digital conferences in the region, with over 1,400 registered attendees. I was just one of many presenters from around the world who came to talk about the latest digital trends to an eclectic audience of business people, entrepreneurs, VCS, service providers, and students.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sofia-landscape.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7836\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sofia-landscape.jpg?resize=608%2C288&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"sofia landscape\" width=\"608\" height=\"288\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sofia has the reputation of being\u00a0a hotbed of technology talent (the phrase \u201cThe Silicon Valley of Southeast Europe\u201d come up several times in discussions). This has been nurtured by a large number of outsourced IT service providers and other technical institutions (for example, SAP has a large <a href=\"http:\/\/go.sap.com\/bulgaria\/about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">development lab in Sofia<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/la-french-tech.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7824 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/la-french-tech-e1464668523543.jpg?resize=212%2C83&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"la french tech\" width=\"212\" height=\"83\" \/><\/a>One of the biggest sponsors of the conference was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lafrenchtech.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">La French Tech<\/a>, a government-funded program to encourage startup creation and investment. At an evening event for speakers at the French Embassy, the French Ambassador to Bulgaria did a masterful job of explaining the programs benefits to any Bulgarian startups that were interested in moving to France.<\/p>\n<p>My presentation covered The Future of Customer Experience, explaining why companies need to spend less time telling people how great they are (i.e. traditional marketing) and more time\u00a0<em>being great<\/em> (focusing on optimizing every aspect of the end-to-end customer journey).<\/p>\n<p>And at least one person liked the presentation\u00a0&#8212; thanks <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/borishristov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boris<\/a>! \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sap-storytelling-tweet.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7840\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/sap-storytelling-tweet.jpg?resize=608%2C264&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"sap storytelling tweet\" width=\"608\" height=\"264\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were many, many interesting talks over the two days &#8212; here&#8217;s just a small selection of some of my favorites:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cubedweller\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alex Hunter<\/a> of Attach\u00e9, on \u201cThe Science and Art of Brand Experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You have to use what you know to create delight. For example, Tony Fadell was one of the fathers of the iPod &#8212; he could have done <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">anything<\/span> after Apple. And yet he said to himself\u00a0&#8216;you know what would be fun? thermostats!&#8217;. And so he founded Nest and he make thermostats\u00a0so beautiful I just\u00a0want to lick one! Could you ever have imagined people saying &#8216;hey, wanna come over to my house to see my thermostat?!&#8217;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/t_1_m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tim Steigert<\/a>\u00a0of GE, talking about &#8220;Reinventing a Giant: The 124 Year-Old Startup&#8221;, explaining\u00a0the big cultural changes that the internet of things is bringing to the company.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>GE used to have one global strategy &#8212; now we have 160 strategies adapted to the local conditions.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/renosfo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reno Marioni<\/a>, Director of Digital Services at BMW, talked about &#8220;Connected Cars and the Future of Mobility&#8221;, explaining the various initiatives the company is working on to optimize the customer experience for drivers in the future. BMW is a big SAP customer, and the two companies are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cWo4lDa_1uw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working together<\/a> on the new initiative, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/hana.sap.com\/implementation\/customer-innovation\/solutions\/vehicles-network.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP Vehicles Network<\/a> initiative.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/reno-marioni-digitalk.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7830\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/reno-marioni-digitalk.jpg?resize=608%2C384&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"reno marioni digitalk\" width=\"608\" height=\"384\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/marinahaydn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Marina Haydn<\/a>, SVP Circulation and Retail Marketing for The Economist (\u201cAKA Ambassador of Print\u201d) on \u201cThe Future of Marketing Adapt and Transform\u201d. This included very interesting data from a EIU\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/futureofmarketing.eiu.com\/briefing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rise of the Marketer<\/a>\u00a0study.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/economist-changes-to-marketing.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7835\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/economist-changes-to-marketing.jpg?resize=608%2C433&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"economist changes to marketing\" width=\"608\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>81% \u00a0of marketers\u00a0believe that now is\u00a0the time to embark on rapid change in the way they\u00a0run the marketing function.<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\">Over the next three to five years, 75% of\u00a0marketers say they will be responsible for the\u00a0end-to-end experience over the customer\u2019s\u00a0lifetime.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p class=\"p1\">The 22% of marketers who view\u00a0engagement as being primarily about heightened brand awareness,\u00a0rather than things like\u00a0customer renewals, repeat purchases or retention,\u00a0are\u00a0significantly less likely to think that marketing\u00a0needs to change<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/uximius\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Christopher Daly<\/a>,\u00a0Head of UX and Digital Product Design at Sotheby\u2019s, talking about &#8220;The Ambient and Invisible Future of Experience Design&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Big UX is dead \u2014 may your wireframes rest in eternal peace!&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/zbrand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Zach Brand<\/a>, Formerly of the Washington Post and\u00a0National Public Radio (\u201cI\u2019m currently\u00a0VP of Being on Holiday with My Children \u2014 It\u2019s a great gig!\u201d).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It&#8217;s first and foremost about the audience. The right place to start your digital strategy is having an audience strategy. It&#8217;s not about the technology, it&#8217;s about meeting the audience expectations<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Zach\u00a0included an interesting look at the Washington Post&#8217;s \u201cBandito\u201d project that was used\u00a0to optimize clickbait newspaper titles. The solution automatically carries out\u00a0A\/B testing on various headlines, then gradually\u00a0moves everybody to the most optimal choices.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bandito-small.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7833\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/bandito-small.jpg?resize=608%2C456&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"bandito small\" width=\"608\" height=\"456\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If ever you have the opportunity to visit for Digitalk 2017, I thoroughly recommend it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>During my stay, I also had the chance to attend the\u00a0local launch of the <a href=\"http:\/\/go.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/cloud-analytics\/boardroom-future.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP Digital Boardroom<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/go.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/cloud-analytics.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP BusinessObjects Cloud Analytics<\/a> solutions.
