{"id":12499,"date":"2016-06-10T10:20:00","date_gmt":"2016-06-10T09:20:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/?p=7821"},"modified":"2021-08-16T18:20:36","modified_gmt":"2021-08-16T16:20:36","slug":"concur-analytics-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2016\/06\/concur-analytics-tour.html","title":{"rendered":"What I Learned At The Concur Analytics UK Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7907 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/london-millenium-bridge-small.jpg?resize=608%2C291&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"london millenium bridge small\" width=\"608\" height=\"291\" \/><\/p>\n<p>I recently had the opportunity to join Concur experts as part of an Analytics tour in the UK, with\u00a0two presentations in in Manchester and London.<\/p>\n<p>As you probably know, SAP acquired <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concur.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concur<\/a>, a leading provider of travel and expenses solutions, a little over 18 months ago.<\/p>\n<p>Concur is focused on providing the &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concur.com\/en-us\/resources\/perfect-trip\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perfect Trip<\/a>&#8221; with alerts and automation providing the most seamless travel experience possible.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m a keen user\u00a0of Concur myself via the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripit.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TripIt<\/a> application. I simply forward my email travel notifications (flights, hotels, etc.) and it assembles them into trips and adds relevant information (maps, weather, etc.).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/tarble\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brian Tarble<\/a>, Concur&#8217;s Senior Director of Global Product for analytics opened the sessions with\u00a0an overview of current innovations in the company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concur.com\/en-us\/business-intelligence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concur Intelligence<\/a>\u00a0solution.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7909 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/concur-intelligence.jpg?resize=608%2C154&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"concur intelligence\" width=\"608\" height=\"154\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This includes more persona-focused dashboards, better cleansing and normalizing of data, and more proactive analytics with automated triggers and actionable alerts.<\/p>\n<p>Up until now, Concur had focused on providing solutions for two main roles: travel managers and users, but came to realize that when it came to analytics, there were many other profiles that\u00a0needed access to travel information. And so the company has worked to provide\u00a0different interfaces and analytic dashboards for department managers, expense managers, finance managers, travel managers, vendor managers, and legal &amp; tax managers.<\/p>\n<p>For each &#8220;persona&#8221;, the company did research into\u00a0the problems faced by the role, the insights they might need, and &#8212; most importantly &#8212; how that insight could\u00a0be turned into concrete actions.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7910\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/concur-insight-to-action.jpg?resize=608%2C311&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"concur insight to action\" width=\"608\" height=\"311\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, rather than just sending a report that summarizes prior and future travel compared to budget, department managers should be able to set\u00a0a trigger\u00a0when the travel expenses reach, say, 80% of the budget. And since the point is to help managers better <em>manage<\/em> expenses, not just view them, the analytics system\u00a0should be able to\u00a0automatically trigger changes to operational processes.\u00a0For example, by adding an extra authorization step into the existing travel booking workflow.<\/p>\n<p>As with all analytics, getting the right data is a big part of the problem. To fix this, Concur does a lot of work to connect, clean, and normalize all relevant data elements across the travel booking system, the travel company, data from credit cards, HR information, and the expense system.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-7911\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/concur-single-source-of-truth.jpg?resize=608%2C308&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"concur single source of truth\" width=\"608\" height=\"308\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This helps organizations spot problems and fraud that might not come to light if you analyzed\u00a0data from any one of the disparate systems used as part of the travel and expense process.<\/p>\n<p>For example, imagine an employee who doesn\u2019t book travel through the corporate system, who claims fees for extra miles as \u201cexcess baggage\u201d, and travels in business class despite only being authorized to travel in economy.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Looking at the travel booking system, you might think the employee doesn\u2019t travel at all;<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the credit card data, you might think that she just travels with a lot of baggage;<\/li>\n<li>Looking at the claim system you might not realized that the employee was traveling in business without being authorized.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Having all this data cleanly integrated makes it much easier to see that the employee is in fact carrying out deliberate, systematic fraud.<\/p>\n<p>These types of insight are more powerful if all employee travel is covered. As a frequent traveler myself, I know that I sometimes have to resort to booking trips\u00a0directly because it was not an available option in the standard corporate system.\u00a0So I was particularly interested by Concur&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.concur.com\/en-us\/triplink\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TripLink<\/a> solution that enables organizations to capture and analyze even the reservations that employees book directly with external providers.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, Concur offers customers, for a one-off setup fee, the ability to extract travel and expense information to an organization&#8217;s data warehouse for an even more seamless organizational view.<\/p>\n<h3>Looking to the future<\/h3>\n<p>Concur is continuing to expand its existing business intelligence solutions, for example with the addition of more language coverage over the coming quarters. But in parallel, the company is working on the next generation of its analytics solutions that will be based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/hcp.sap.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP HANA cloud platform<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, this will address the need for better\u00a0real-time access to travel information. Much of the data used for Concur analytics today is uploaded through nightly batch jobs. The means that the information is at least a day old, and this is increasingly out of step with the need for <a href=\"http:\/\/discover.sap.com\/live-business\/en-us\/index.html\/?campaigncode=CRM-XH16-SOC-RUNSMPLSOC&amp;source=timoelliott\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Live Business<\/a>\u00a0processes.<\/p>\n<p>For example, Brian Tarble gave the example of a deeply-indebted employee who\u00a0used her corporate card for a personal spending spree just before leaving\u00a0a company. Because of the lags in the system, the company didn&#8217;t find out until several weeks\u00a0after the employee had left. Had the information been available for analysis sooner, the company could have retained the expenses from the\u00a0final pay check, rather than expend time and energy trying to claim it back.<\/p>\n<p>Using the SAP HANA cloud platform will also expand analysis possibilities with integrated spatial, text analytics, and predictive features, and make it easier for real-time integration with other corporate and big data systems.<\/p>\n<h3>SAP travel analytics examples<\/h3>\n<p>For my presentation, I gave examples of how analytics is changing the world, and SAP has helped other organizations analyze and optimize different aspect of travel (Manchester) and the finance function (London).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/go.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/cloud-analytics\/cloud-bi.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP BusinessObjects Cloud<\/a> can be used today to access information from a wide variety of different systems and a specific &#8220;connector&#8221; for Concur is currently <a href=\"http:\/\/www.asugnews.com\/article\/sap-cloud-for-analytics-data-integration-roadmap\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, I talked about the opportunities for greater use of\u00a0predictive analytics in the future\u00a0&#8212; for example, we can now start to use algorithms to\u00a0automatically find and define \u201cunusual\u201d behavior.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of existing solutions in this area include\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/go.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/enterprise-compliance\/fraud-management.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SAP Fraud Management<\/a>. It\u00a0covers compliance and fraud analysis in many different types of processes and transaction, including travel and expenses. For example you can use advanced functionality such as\u00a0social network analysis to spot sophisticated insurance claim fraud patterns, even when each individual claim does not set off any alarm bells.<\/p>\n<p>Other presentations at the conference included more details about how to get them most out of Concur reporting from\u00a0<span class=\"fn\"><span class=\"full-name\" dir=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/pavel-kuchyna-0465232b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pavel Kuchyna<\/a> and\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"fn\"><span class=\"full-name\" dir=\"auto\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/petra-zava%C4%8F%C3%A1kov%C3%A1-11700362\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Petra Zavad\u00e1kov\u00e1<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/jacqui-carey-mba-491bb69?\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jacqui Carey<\/a>\u00a0explained the advantages of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concur.com.au\/invoice-management\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Concur Invoice Management <\/a>solutions that allow organizations to manage other types of expenses in addition to travel. Joining the Concur Analytics tour was a refreshing change, with the ability to drill into the analytics needs of a much more defined business area.<\/p>\n<p>In particular, it\u00a0highlighted for me the importance of\u00a0tight links between &#8220;analytics&#8221; and &#8220;operations&#8221; that are too often thought of as separate disciplines.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is that for most managers, these activities are just two sides of a seamless business process. They don&#8217;t want self-service analysis tools that are separate and incompatible with their business processes &#8212; they want to be able to access the information they need automatically as part of a seamless flow.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, ideally they don&#8217;t want to have to do much &#8220;analysis&#8221; at all &#8212; they want systems with\u00a0the intelligence to understand\u00a0what is\u00a0happening and automatically take proactive steps to prevent\u00a0bad things from happening in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>The future is in embedded analytics as part of seamless business workflows in addition to self-service tools &#8212; and thanks to new cloud solutions like Concur, SAP is maintaining its fight against non-integrated, standalone analytic\u00a0silos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently had the opportunity to join Concur experts as part of an Analytics tour in the UK, with\u00a0two presentations in in Manchester and London.
