{"id":13414,"date":"2017-03-14T18:20:23","date_gmt":"2017-03-14T17:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/?p=13414"},"modified":"2017-03-14T18:20:23","modified_gmt":"2017-03-14T17:20:23","slug":"the-vast-majority-of-analytics-is-still-reporting-and-thats-not-so-bad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2017\/03\/the-vast-majority-of-analytics-is-still-reporting-and-thats-not-so-bad.html","title":{"rendered":"The Vast Majority of Analytics is Still Reporting (And That&#8217;s Not So Bad)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Despite the surge in interest and sales of modern data discovery tools like <a href=\"http:\/\/saplumira.com\/\">SAP BusinessObjects Lumira<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/cloud-analytics\/cloud-bi.html\">SAP BusinessObjects Cloud<\/a>, corporations are still really, really interested in\u00a0reporting.<\/p>\n<p>At the recent Gartner Data &amp; Analytics event in Texas, Cindi Howson showed that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/it-glossary\/descriptive-analytics\/\">descriptive analytics<\/a> remains\u00a0by far the most common type of analysis\u00a0that companies do in the real world.<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13418\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/74-percent-is-descriptive-analytics.jpg?resize=608%2C456&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/74-percent-is-descriptive-analytics.jpg?resize=608%2C456&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/74-percent-is-descriptive-analytics.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/74-percent-is-descriptive-analytics.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/74-percent-is-descriptive-analytics.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/>Last year, Gartner <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2016\/04\/bi-is-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\">redefined<\/a> the BI and Analytics Platforms Magic Quadrant, relegating\u00a0traditional self-service and interactive reporting tools that do the bulk of today&#8217;s descriptive analytics, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sap.com\/product\/analytics\/bi-platform\/web-intelligence.html\" target=\"_blank\">WebIntelligence<\/a>, to a separate\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/doc\/3211217\/market-guide-enterprisereportingbased-platforms\" target=\"_blank\">Enterprise-Reporting Based Platforms<\/a>\u00a0report &#8212; even though\u00a0the newer tools\u00a0made up only\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JoshParenteau\/status\/707565107052732416\" target=\"_blank\">25%<\/a>\u00a0of the overall market for analytics software.<\/p>\n<p>Demand for the new tools is increasing rapidly, for good reasons. In particular, they are more agile and so can more easily keep up with ever-changing analytic needs. But in most organizations, there are still plenty of business benefits that can\u00a0be achieved with traditional enterprise reporting\u00a0tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/modern-bi-from-reporting-to-predictive.html\" target=\"_blank\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/1458568058_thumb.jpeg?resize=224%2C119&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"119\" align=\"middle\" \/><\/a>For example, fresh-food supplier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pret.com\/\">Pret a Manger<\/a>\u00a0used WebIntelligence to deliver <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2016\/03\/modern-bi-from-reporting-to-predictive.html\" target=\"_blank\">real-time, actionable information on mobile devices to front-line workers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The insights\u00a0made a huge difference to the way the company was run, even though this investment\u00a0is no longer considered &#8220;analytics&#8221; according to\u00a0Gartner&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/doc\/3394417\/evaluation-criteria-business-intelligence-analytics\" target=\"_blank\">latest criteria<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/donaldmaccormick\/\">Donald MacCormic<\/a>k has often pointed out in his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/you-want-sandwich-would-tolerate-bi-style-donald-maccormick\">blog posts<\/a>, the reality is that many (most?) people just want easy access to the information\u00a0they need to do their job.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/weather-icons-small.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13427 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/weather-icons-small.jpg?resize=249%2C92&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"249\" height=\"92\" \/><\/a>For example, some of the most powerful computers in the world are used to calculate weather predictions, but most of us are happy to consume all that\u00a0complexity as a simple symbol that tells us whether to bring an umbrella or not.<\/p>\n<p>Even if newer solutions can provide the same information in more flexible ways,\u00a0many\u00a0organizations have made big investments in\u00a0traditional interactive reporting and IT-created dashboards over the years and see no big incentive to recreate them all from scratch in newer tools.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/sap-1-in-end-user-query-and-reporting-since-1997.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-13416 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/sap-1-in-end-user-query-and-reporting-since-1997.png?resize=201%2C219&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"201\" height=\"219\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/sap-1-in-end-user-query-and-reporting-since-1997.png?resize=608%2C664&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/sap-1-in-end-user-query-and-reporting-since-1997.png?resize=768%2C838&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/sap-1-in-end-user-query-and-reporting-since-1997.png?w=916&amp;ssl=1 916w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>This helps explain the remarkable robustness of the market share held by traditional analytics vendors. For example, I stumbled across this old\u00a0chart of IDC market share data (3D charts alert!). It shows the market-leading share of SAP BusinessObjects in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>Analytics has been at or near the top of CIO priority lists ever since. Every year, organizations carefully compare the dozens of different analytics products available to them, and invest in the ones that are the best fit for their real-world needs.<\/p>\n<p>IDC eventually renamed the category &#8220;Worldwide Query, Reporting, and Analysis&#8221; revenue, but\u00a0SAP \/ BusinessObjects has now been the number one analytics vendor for over <strong>two decades<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For organizations that already have a lot of reports, it makes a lot of sense to continue to invest in vendors that can support their existing infrastructure as well as help them with the transition\u00a0to compatible modern data discovery and visualization tools.
