The domains are interconnected and independent and organizations will focus on the one or few with the most impact for them, but it&#8217;s\u00a0clear that <strong>Intelligence<\/strong> &#8212; i.e. data and analytics &#8212; is at the heart of the organizations of the future.<\/p>\n<p>For the last few decades, we\u2019ve typically thought of business intelligence as a byproduct of our operational processes. We manufacture products, ship them around the world, and sell them to customers. Each of these processes generates a lot of data, and we use that data both to keep track of operations and to create more optimized processes in the future.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/used-to-analytics-on-processes.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13476\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/used-to-analytics-on-processes.jpg?resize=608%2C310&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"310\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/used-to-analytics-on-processes.jpg?resize=608%2C310&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/used-to-analytics-on-processes.jpg?w=718&amp;ssl=1 718w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a>This remains as true and important today as it\u2019s ever been in the past. But organizations are increasingly realizing that digital transformation doesn\u2019t just require new processes \u2013 it requires a new approach to <i>creating and implementing<\/i> <i>business processes<\/i>. New processes are <strong>created on the fly<\/strong><strong>\u00a0by<\/strong> <strong>analytics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The typical customer journey is a great example. Think about how you purchase products today. In the old days, it was a fairly linear process that companies could characterize as a \u201csales funnel\u201d. But now it\u2019s more like a \u201cwrite your own adventure\u201d book \u2013 where there are many different possible interaction paths, and at each point in the process, you as a customer get to choose the next chapter and the next point of interaction.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/choose-your-own-adventure-small.png?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13492\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/choose-your-own-adventure-small-608x322.png?resize=608%2C322&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"322\" \/><\/a>The job of modern marketers is to optimize the whole system of touch points to maximize\u00a0the flow of satisfied customers. And to do that, they rely on\u00a0analytics, to guide\u00a0the customer at each point \u2013 \u201cyou may be interested in these other products\u201d or \u201chere&#8217;s a discount if you purchase now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the new world, it&#8217;s no longer about having a\u00a0\u201ccustomer process,\u201d it&#8217;s about\u00a0creating\u00a0thousands or millions of personalized \u201cprocesses\u201d on the fly, based on the needs of each individual.<\/p>\n<p>Because these new processes are analytics-powered, they can be much more agile and responsive to change \u2013 indeed, with new machine learning approaches, they can even update themselves, automatically adjusting to consumer behavior.<\/p>\n<p>And this doesn&#8217;t just apply to marketing.
