{"id":13722,"date":"2017-06-27T12:33:09","date_gmt":"2017-06-27T10:33:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/?p=13722"},"modified":"2018-07-01T15:39:17","modified_gmt":"2018-07-01T13:39:17","slug":"from-understanding-big-data-to-monetizing-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2017\/06\/from-understanding-big-data-to-monetizing-it.html","title":{"rendered":"From Understanding Big Data to Monetizing It"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There have been a lot of articles about the <a href=\"https:\/\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/2013\/07\/7-definitions-of-big-data-you-should-know-about.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">definition of the term Big Data<\/a>, but the most common involves the 3Vs, originally coined by analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/doug_laney?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Doug Laney<\/a> &#8212; Volume, Velocity, and Variety.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13724\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?resize=608%2C456&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?resize=608%2C456&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?resize=768%2C576&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?resize=1024%2C768&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/big-data-and-the-four-Ms.jpg?w=2048&amp;ssl=1 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/schmarzo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bill Schmarzo<\/a> has pointed out, most business people care about the 4Ms instead &#8212; <a href=\"https:\/\/infocus.emc.com\/william_schmarzo\/4-ms-of-big-data-make-me-more-money\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Make Me More Money!<\/a>\u00a0(For non-profit organizations,\u00a0<span class=\"feed-s-comment-item__name Sans-13px-black-70%-semibold\" data-entity-hovercard-id=\"urn:li:fs_miniProfile:ACoAAABxW3wBhZu0sj-7tBgU6YaDAQzcbxnFJco\"><a id=\"ember2146\" class=\"profile-link tap-target ember-view\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/mlbreton\/\" data-control-name=\"comment_actor\">Marie Breton<\/a>\u00a0points out that the 4Ms could equally stand for Make My Mission Matter.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Doug Laney recently saw my\u00a0cartoon above and revealed\u00a0that it was exactly the kind of customer enquiries\u00a0he now deals with at Gartner:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Most of our clients have evolved from asking about &#8220;What is big data?&#8221; to &#8220;How do I benefit from big data?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Doug\u00a0has been working on a new book about this entitled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Infonomics-Monetize-Information-Competitive-Advantage\/dp\/1138090387\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1498557153&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=infonomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Infonomics<\/a>, due out in September 2017. Delightfully, it uses 3Ms to define the term:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Infonomics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Infonomics<\/a> is the theory, study and discipline of asserting economic significance to information. It provides the framework for businesses to <strong>measure, manage and monetize<\/strong> information as a real asset.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember2060\" class=\"feed-s-comment-item__main-content feed-s-main-content--comment Sans-13px-black-70% feed-s-main-content ember-view\" dir=\"ltr\">Here&#8217;s an explanatory slide Doug used in\u00a0a presentation\u00a0on Infonomics at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartner.com\/events\/na\/tech-growth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gartner Tech Growth &amp; Innovation<\/a> conference last week:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13723\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?resize=608%2C336&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?resize=608%2C336&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?resize=768%2C424&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?resize=1024%2C566&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/3-Ms-of-infonomics.jpg?w=1169&amp;ssl=1 1169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a>Clearly, the future of data is all about moving from the Vs to the Ms!<\/p>\n<p>So how can companies do that?\u00a0Today, the majority of\u00a0analytics departments say that their organization still doesn&#8217;t really treat information as a strategic asset:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-13733\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?resize=608%2C268&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"608\" height=\"268\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?resize=608%2C268&amp;ssl=1 608w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?resize=768%2C338&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?resize=1024%2C451&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/timoelliott.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/data-treated-as-important-asset.jpg?w=1300&amp;ssl=1 1300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 608px) 100vw, 608px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As Doug puts it, &#8220;most organizations have a better inventory of their office furniture than their information assets!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And increasingly, it&#8217;s about much more than &#8220;just&#8221; business intelligence and analytics to improve corporate decision-making. Data is at the heart of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapdatanetwork.com\/Reimagine.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new digital business models<\/a> that allow companies to monetize information more directly than in the past.<\/p>\n<p>In order to support companies in these efforts, SAP recently\u00a0created a <a href=\"http:\/\/news.sap.com\/sap-data-network-unlocks-the-value-in-enterprise-data\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new initiative<\/a> called the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapdatanetwork.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SAP Data Network<\/a>. It&#8217;s an &#8220;internal startup&#8221; headed up by former SAP CIO <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/arnold_ih?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Helen Arnold<\/a>, and it&#8217;s essentially designed to help organizations with their Infonomics efforts:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;SAP Data Network helps organizations turn their transactional business data into actionable insights, enabling them to create new value in the form of unprecedented revenue opportunities, efficiency improvements and better customer experience.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>See the video <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sapdatanetwork.com\/video\/information.mp4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Many of these new initiatives will be across existing company boundaries, using data to create\u00a0&#8220;systems of systems&#8221; and &#8220;ecosystems of ecosystems&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>What about you, in your organization?
